Katie sat in silence, waiting for her husband to speak. His trembling hands finally stilled, but he kept watching out the motorhome’s windows.
His face twisted as he glanced her way.
“I saw…” He coughed, then looked at Timothy and Duke. “I saw a sasquatch.”
She almost expected him to wink or laugh or… something.
To indicate he was joking.
But he didn’t wink.
His blue eyes turned on her fiercely, as if daring her to counter his words.
“A bigfoot?” she asked.
Surely she’d misheard him.
Frowning, he nodded once.
Her breath left her lungs.
Bigfoot?
They didn’t exist. They were a legend. A myth.
But her husband was convinced he’d seen one. He was terrified by it.
He’d finally cracked.
Under all the strain and fear of the past days… he’d finally broken mentally. Now he was suffering from delusions.
He’d lost his mind.
Katie pressed her lips together.
Her husband had suffered some kind of psychosis. And now, they were all stuck here in this little motorhome. And his twitching fingers held a gun.
She swallowed.
His eyes dared her to disagree.
She swallowed again.
“Um…”
“You don’t believe me.” His tone was more hurt than accusing. He leaned toward her, staring into her eyes. “I know what I saw, Kate!”
She drew back.
A million thoughts crowded her mind, but none of them made any sense. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Frowning, she glanced at Timothy. He was just finishing his cookie.
She bit her lip. She had to say something… but what?
Couldn’t argue, not yet – he was too wound up.
She couldn’t persuade, either. He was convinced.
Slowly, she drew a deep breath. She’d have to calm him down, and she needed to calm herself first.
“Okay….” She looked into his eyes and fought her own fears. “Tell me what you saw. But first, let’s put the gun away.”
He shook his head, his wide eyes defiant. “What if they get into the shop?”
Katie’s stomach twisted. She made herself take a slow breath.
“We’ll put it up on our bed,” she said. “You can get it if we need it.”
“You don’t believe me!” His fingers tightened around the shotgun. “You think I’m nuts!”
“Zach.” She glanced at their son, then back to her husband, continuing in a whisper. “You’re scaring Timothy!”
She didn’t mention that he was scaring her to death, too.
